The Anthropology of Ancient Greek Sacrificial Ritual and Myth

Burkert's influential study, first published in German in 1972, traces Greek sacrificial ritual back to the hunting societies of prehistory. He reads sacrifice as a ritual that dramatises killing and the guilt surrounding it, and applies this model to festivals, myths and mystery cults. Much debated, it remains a landmark in the study of Greek religion.
