Islam and Sufism

The Qur'an, the Prophet, Islamic law and theology, and the mystical path of Sufism.

Islam teaches submission to one God as revealed to the Prophet Muhammad in the Qur'an between about 610 and 632. This section covers the Qur'an and the hadith, the life of the Prophet, the Five Pillars, Islamic law and theology, the division between Sunni and Shi'a, and the philosophical tradition of Avicenna and Averroes. It gives particular attention to Sufism, Islam's mystical path, and to the Islamic sciences of the occult — the science of letters, talismans, astrology and the jinn — which shaped medieval magic in both the Islamic world and Europe.
