The Witch-Cult in Western Europe

Margaret Murray's 1921 study argued that the witches persecuted in early modern Europe were members of a surviving pagan fertility religion. Drawing on trial records, she reconstructed what she saw as its organization and practices. Although her thesis has been widely rejected by historians, the book profoundly influenced the development of modern Wicca and is important for understanding the revival's intellectual roots.
