Witches and Pagans

An independent scholar's study of women's roles in early medieval European folk religion, drawing on penitentials, law codes, sagas and chronicles. Dashu examines seeresses, healers, charms, goddess veneration and the vocabulary of witchcraft as Christianisation proceeded. Written from a feminist perspective, it collects a wide range of sources and suits readers interested in women's history and the background of later witchcraft concepts.
