Ash

Ash · Nion

Ash (Nion), month 3 of the modern 'Celtic tree calendar', 18 February – 17 March.

The ash was a tree of great importance in Irish lore, and Norse mythology made the ash Yggdrasil the world tree, an association modern writers often borrow. In the tree calendar it stands for connection between the worlds and for the rising energy of spring.

The thirteen tree months come from Robert Graves' The White Goddess (1948), not from ancient sources. The tree associations of the Ogham letters do go back to medieval Irish scholars, but there is no evidence for an ancient Celtic tree calendar.

In the modern 'Celtic tree calendar', a person born in the Ash month (18 February – 17 March) is described as imaginative, intuitive and artistic, with a sense of connection between different worlds. The tree calendar is a modern creation, drawn from Robert Graves' The White Goddess (1948), not a calendar of the ancient Celts; Ash corresponds to the Ogham letter Nion, and Graves placed it as the spring's energy rises.

Modern books shape the Ash personality around the tree's importance in Irish lore and, borrowed from Norse myth, Yggdrasil, the ash that links the worlds. Ash people are said to be creative, open-minded and drawn to art, science and spiritual inquiry, able to see how things connect. Their challenges are described as moodiness, a tendency to withdraw into their own thoughts and impatience with routine or rules.

In love Ash people are portrayed as passionate and loyal, needing a partner who respects their inner life; in work, as artists, writers, healers and thinkers who bridge disciplines. The Ash portrait, like the rest of the scheme, is best read as a modern poetic meditation on the tree rather than ancient lore.
