James George Frazer's comparative study of magic and religion, first published in 1890 and later expanded into many volumes. Starting from the ritual of the priest-king at Nemi, it explores sympathetic magic, sacred kingship, dying and reviving gods and fertility rituals across cultures. Although its methods and conclusions are now dated, it was enormously influential in anthropology, literature and the development of modern paganism.
