Carlo Ginzburg's study of the benandanti, members of an agrarian cult in sixteenth- and seventeenth-century Friuli who claimed to battle witches in spirit to protect the harvest. Using Inquisition records, he shows how inquisitors gradually reshaped these beliefs into the stereotype of diabolical witchcraft. It is a landmark of microhistory and an important source for the study of popular beliefs about witchcraft.
