David Stevenson's historical study argues that the institutional origins of modern Freemasonry lie in late sixteenth- and seventeenth-century Scotland. He examines the records of Scottish operative lodges, the Schaw Statutes and the gradual admission of gentlemen, as well as the influence of Renaissance ideas such as the art of memory and Hermeticism. It is a key academic work on the history of Freemasonry and its relationship to Renaissance thought.
