Russell traces how the concept of the diabolical witch developed between the early Middle Ages and the late fifteenth century, drawing on sources about popular sorcery, heresy trials and theological debate. He argues that the witch stereotype grew from a convergence of folk magic, heresy and scholastic demonology. Though some conclusions have been revised, it remains a valuable introduction to the medieval background of the witch-hunts.
