A Letter … Discourse Apologeticall
John Dee wrote this open letter to John Whitgift, Archbishop of Canterbury, in 1594/5, and had it printed in 1599 to answer the rumour that he was a conjurer of devils. He reviews the course of his studies, lists the books he had written, printed and unprinted, from his Compendious Rehearsal of 1592, and calls God to witness that his philosophy had always been lawful, sincere and Christian. An epilogue, a testimony and a peroration close the pamphlet with a solemn protestation of his innocence. Meric Casaubon reprinted the letter in 1659 at the head of A True and Faithful Relation. This text follows the EEBO-TCP transcription of the original 1599 printing.
