1652 · The Fame and Confession of the Rosie Cross
Anonymous (the Rosicrucian manifestos); preface by Thomas Vaughan (Eugenius Philalethes) · 1652
The Fame and Confession of the Rosie Cross
This 1652 volume gave English readers the two Rosicrucian manifestos, the Fama Fraternitatis (Kassel, 1614) and the Confessio Fraternitatis (1615). The Fama tells the legend of Brother C. R., his travels to Damcar and Fez, the founding of the fraternity and the discovery of his vault, and invites the learned of Europe to join the reform of knowledge; the Confessio defends the order and its hopes for the end of the age. The anonymous translation was published by Thomas Vaughan under his pen-name Eugenius Philalethes, who added a long preface on the antiquity of the brethren's wisdom and a short advertisement on their physical work. The text follows the EEBO-TCP transcription of the 1652 printing.
