The Magical Circle and Triangle of Solomon

Goetia, "The Magical Circle" and "The Magical Triangle of Solomon" (Mathers–Crowley 1904)

The Goetia's circle is nine feet across. Between its outer and inner rings a serpent is coiled in bright deep yellow, and along it are written, in black, the divine, archangelic and angelic names of the Sephiroth from Eheieh down to Levanah, the Moon. Hexagrams bearing the letters of ADONAI stand inside the circle and pentagrams inscribed "Tetragrammaton" outside it, with a red central square for the master. The triangle is drawn two feet away, three feet across, its apex towards the quarter of the spirit. The name Michael is written inside on white, three red names surround it, and its central circle is dark green. The 1904 edition supplies the colours; the Moon's age must be observed.

Purpose

The circle protects the operator, and the triangle outside it is the place into which the conjured spirit is commanded to appear.

Timing

Moon
Waxing (increasing in light)

The Goetia's "Observations" permit work only when the Moon is 2, 4, 6, 8, 10, 12 or 14 days old, i.e. on even days of the waxing half of the lunar month. The triangle is oriented towards the quarter ruled by the spirit's king.
