About the Wheel of the Year
The Wheel of the Year is the modern Pagan cycle of eight festivals: the solstices and equinoxes (Yule, Ostara, Litha and Mabon) and the four 'cross-quarter' days between them (Imbolc, Beltane, Lughnasadh and Samhain). The cross-quarter festivals echo the Gaelic seasonal feasts, and the solar festivals reflect English folk custom, but the combined eight-fold calendar was assembled in the mid-twentieth century in the circles of Gerald Gardner and Ross Nichols; several of the names, such as Mabon and Litha, were popularised in the 1970s. In the southern hemisphere many Pagans turn the wheel by six months so that the festivals follow the local seasons.
