The Apocrypha

The Apocrypha are the books and additions found in the Greek and Latin Bibles of antiquity but not in the Hebrew canon. Most were written by Jews between about the third century BCE and the first century CE: histories such as 1 and 2 Maccabees, tales such as Tobit, Judith and Susanna, the wisdom of Ecclesiasticus and the Wisdom of Solomon, and the visions of 2 Esdras. Catholic and Orthodox churches count most of them as scripture; Protestant churches set them apart as edifying reading. The King James translators rendered them in 1611 and printed them between the Testaments, and the text here is the standard later form of that version. The Rest of Esther is numbered 1 to 7 here rather than 10:4 to 16:24, and the Epistle of Jeremy is the sixth chapter of Baruch, as in the 1611 printing.
