The seal of Bael opens the catalogue of seventy-two spirits in the Ars Goetia, the first book of the Lemegeton. The text calls him the first principal spirit, a king ruling in the East, whose office is to make people invisible. He is said to appear in the form of a cat, a toad or a man, or in all three at once, and to speak hoarsely. Johann Weyer's Pseudomonarchia Daemonum (1563) also places him first, under the spelling Baël, and gives him the same 66 legions. The circular seal reproduced in the 1904 edition follows the Sloane manuscripts.
