Purva Phalguni

Front legs of a bed

Purva Phalguni, nakshatra 11 of 27 (13°20′ Simha – 26°40′ Simha), ruled by Venus, presided over by Bhaga; symbol: front legs of a bed.

Purva Phalguni is the 11th of the twenty-seven nakshatras, the lunar mansions of Indian astrology, spanning 13°20′ Simha – 26°40′ Simha of the sidereal zodiac. Its presiding deity is Bhaga, and its traditional symbol is the front legs of a bed. In the Vimshottari system its ruling planet is Venus, so a person whose moon falls in Purva Phalguni begins life in the Venus period (dasha).

Each nakshatra is classified by gana, or temperament — divine (deva), human (manushya) or demonic (rakshasa) — and Purva Phalguni is counted manushya. Astrologers use the nakshatra of the moon at birth for naming (each pada has its own syllable), for matching horoscopes before marriage and for choosing auspicious times (muhurta). The descriptions of each nakshatra in Sanskrit texts such as the Brihat Samhita and in modern handbooks vary, and are best read as traditional associations of its deity and symbol.

Personality

pleasure-loving · creative · charming · generous · affectionate · relaxed

In Vedic astrology a person whose moon falls in Purva Phalguni is described as warm, charming and pleasure-loving, with a gift for enjoyment and creativity. Its symbol is the front legs of a bed or couch, an image of rest and relaxation, and its deity is Bhaga, the god of good fortune, marital happiness and the sharing of wealth.

Traditional descriptions credit Purva Phalguni natives with generosity, sociability, artistic talent, a sweet way of speaking and a love of beauty, comfort and romance; they are said to be fortunate and well liked. Their weaknesses are said to be indulgence, vanity, laziness, a love of luxury beyond means and a tendency to avoid hard work or difficult responsibilities.

In relationships Purva Phalguni is portrayed as affectionate, romantic and devoted to the pleasures of partnership; it is traditionally a nakshatra of love and marriage. In work it is linked with the arts, entertainment, music, fashion and beauty, hospitality, event-planning and diplomacy. Counted among the human (manushya) temperaments, its Vimshottari lord is Venus, whose Navaratna stone is the diamond; the full chart qualifies these tendencies.
