Charles Godfrey Leland's 1899 book presents what he said was a text of Italian witch lore obtained from an informant named Maddalena. It describes Aradia, daughter of the goddess Diana, sent to teach witchcraft to the oppressed. The authenticity of its sources is debated, but its themes influenced the development of modern Wicca and goddess spirituality.
