Theosophy & Modern Esotericism
Esoteric Christianity
Annie Besant's 1901 work presents a Theosophical interpretation of Christianity, arguing that it contains an esoteric teaching hidden beneath its outer doctrines and once transmitted in the mysteries. She discusses the historical and mystical Christ, the atonement, resurrection, the Trinity, prayer and the sacraments. It is an important example of how Theosophy reinterpreted Christian doctrine, and useful for understanding esoteric Christian currents of the early twentieth century.
