The English translation of the Zurich reformer Lavater's treatise on apparitions, first published in German in 1569. It explains reported ghosts as natural illusions, frauds or the work of angels and devils, rejects the Catholic idea of souls returning from purgatory, and discusses Samuel and the woman of Endor at length. It was one of the most widely read Protestant books on spirits.
