The Alchemist
Ben Jonson's comedy, first performed in 1610 and printed in 1612, in which two con artists posing as an alchemist and his assistant fleece a series of greedy Londoners. It satirises alchemical jargon and the credulity of those who hoped for the Philosopher's Stone.
