Huxley's historical account of the alleged mass demonic possession of Ursuline nuns in Loudun in the 1630s and the trial and execution of the priest Urbain Grandier for sorcery. Combining narrative history with reflections on religion, psychology and politics, it explores how possession and exorcism became public spectacle. A literary classic that later inspired Ken Russell's film The Devils.
