Lesser Banishing Ritual of the Pentagram
Hermetic Order of the Golden Dawn Outer Order instruction (1888 onward); printed in Israel Regardie, The Golden Dawn (1937–40)
The operator, facing east, performs the Qabalistic Cross, touching forehead, breast, right and left shoulders and joining the hands while vibrating Ateh, Malkuth, ve-Geburah, ve-Gedulah, le-Olam, Amen. A banishing pentagram is traced in the east with a dagger or the hand and the name YHVH vibrated; then, turning clockwise, Adonai in the south, Eheieh in the west and AGLA in the north, joining the figures with a circle. Standing with arms outstretched the operator invokes Raphael before, Gabriel behind, Michael on the right and Uriel on the left, and declares that the pentagram flames about him and the six-rayed star shines within. The Qabalistic Cross closes the rite. It was the one ritual taught to Outer Order members.
Purpose
The ritual is taught as a means of clearing the operator's space of unwanted elemental influences and as a daily discipline of concentration; the invoking form calls them in.
Timing
No astrological timing. Golden Dawn papers reportedly advised the invoking form in the morning and the banishing form at night; it is commonly performed daily.
