The 72 Spirits of the Ars Goetia
Astaroth
29th spirit of the Ars Goetia · Duke · 40 legions
Astaroth, the twenty-ninth spirit, is a mighty and strong duke ruling 40 legions. The Goetia describes him as a hurtful angel riding an infernal beast like a dragon and holding a viper in his right hand, with a breath so noisome that the operator is warned to guard against it. He answers truly about past, present and future, reveals secrets, speaks of the fall of the spirits and teaches the liberal sciences. His name derives from the Semitic goddess Astarte, the biblical Ashtoreth. The Commons file is an SVG redrawing of the seal rather than a scan of the 1904 plate.
