The 72 Spirits of the Ars Goetia
Barbatos
8th spirit of the Ars Goetia · Duke · 30 legions
Barbatos, the eighth spirit, is a great duke of 30 legions, once of the Order of Virtues. The text says he appears when the Sun is in Sagittarius, accompanied by four noble kings and their troops. He gives understanding of the songs of birds and the voices of other creatures, reveals treasures hidden by enchantment, knows past and future, and reconciles friends and those in power. Weyer describes him as a duke and earl with the same powers. His seal is reproduced in the 1904 edition among the dukes of the catalogue.
