The 72 Spirits of the Ars Goetia
Malphas
39th spirit of the Ars Goetia · President · 40 legions
Malphas, the thirty-ninth spirit, is a great president of 40 legions who appears first as a crow and then in human shape, speaking with a hoarse voice. The Goetia says he builds houses and high towers, brings knowledge of enemies' desires and thoughts, and overthrows enemies' buildings, and that he gives good familiars. The text adds a caution that he receives sacrifices willingly but deceives those who offer them. Weyer's parallel entry describes him in nearly the same terms. His seal is reproduced on Commons from the 1904 edition.
