The 72 Spirits of the Ars Goetia
Phenex
37th spirit of the Ars Goetia · Marquis · 20 legions
Phenex, or Pheynix, is the thirty-seventh spirit, a great marquis of 20 legions. He appears as a phoenix, the mythical firebird, and speaks with the voice of a child, singing sweet notes before taking human shape. The Goetia credits him with speaking marvellously of the sciences and calls him an excellent poet who is willing to perform requests. Like Marchosias he is said to hope for a return to the seventh throne after 1,200 years. Weyer gives a parallel entry under Phoenix. His seal is reproduced from the 1904 Mathers and Crowley edition.
