The Olympic Spirits of the Arbatel
Ophiel
Olympic spirit of Mercury · Arbatel · 14 provinces
Ophiel is the Olympic spirit of Mercury in the Arbatel of Magic (1575), governing 14 of the 196 Olympic provinces. In keeping with Mercury's role as patron of learning, the Arbatel says he teaches all arts and gives a familiar spirit, and that one who holds his character can turn quicksilver into the philosophers' stone. He is said to command a very large number of legions. Ophiel's name and character were taken up by nineteenth- and twentieth-century occult writers, which made him one of the better-known Olympic spirits. The Commons image is an SVG of his character.
