Agrippa's table of Jupiter · 4×4 square · intelligence Johphiel · spirit Hismael
The table of Jupiter is a four-by-four magic square of the numbers 1 to 16, each line totalling 34 and the whole 136. Agrippa gives it with its Hebrew-letter equivalent, the seal of Jupiter, and the sigils of the planet's intelligence Johphiel and spirit Hismael, both names whose letters sum to 136. He describes the table as conferring gain, favour, love and peace. The same order-four square appears in Dürer's engraving Melencolia I (1514). The Commons file is Athanasius Kircher's 1653 printing of the 'Sigillum Iovis' in Oedipus Aegyptiacus, which descends from Agrippa's.
