Liber XXIV · Satanism

Introduction

The Devil in history, Satanist religion and the Left-Hand Path.

Satan has a long history: from the accusing 'adversary' of the Hebrew Bible to the fallen angel of Christian theology and the rebel hero of Milton and the Romantics. Organised religious Satanism is far younger, dating in its familiar form to Anton LaVey's Church of Satan in 1966. This section examines both, along with the Temple of Set, theistic Satanism, Luciferianism, the origins of the term 'Left-Hand Path', and the moral panics that have surrounded the subject, drawing on the growing academic study of Satanism.
