Giordano Bruno and the Hermetic Tradition

Frances A. Yates' 1964 study reinterprets the Renaissance philosopher Giordano Bruno in light of the revival of the Hermetic writings by Marsilio Ficino and others. Yates traces the influence of Hermetic and magical ideas on Renaissance thought and presents Bruno as a Hermetic magus rather than primarily a forerunner of modern science. Though aspects of her thesis have been debated, the book was pivotal in establishing the history of esotericism as a serious academic field.
