Queens of the Wild

Hutton investigates female supernatural figures of medieval and early modern European folklore, including Mother Earth, the Fairy Queen, the Cailleach and the leader of night-flying spirits, asking whether they represent survivals of ancient goddesses. Combining scholarly caution with clear prose, he traces their textual history and reception. Valuable for students of folklore, modern Paganism and debates about pagan survival.
