The Illuminator

Eleven is the first master number of modern numerology: a heightened Two, described as intuitive, inspired and visionary, but highly strung.

Personality

Eleven is the first of the master numbers, which numerologists leave unreduced instead of adding its digits to make 2. The 11 life path is described as carrying the sensitivity and cooperation of Two at a higher pitch, combined with the double One's force of individuality. Elevens are pictured as intuitive, idealistic and inspired, often with an interest in religion, art or the inner life, and with a sense of having something to give that is larger than themselves.

Strengths

The strengths of Eleven are vision, intuition and the ability to inspire. Elevens are said to sense what lies beneath the surface, to grasp ideas before they can explain them and to move others through example, art or teaching. They are described as compassionate, creative and drawn to bring light, in the tradition's favourite image, into dark places.

Challenges

Numerologists are frank that Eleven is described as a difficult number to live with. The heightened sensitivity can turn into nervous tension, anxiety, self-doubt or impracticality. Elevens may feel torn between grand ideals and ordinary life, or swing between confidence and despair. Many writers say an Eleven often lives as a Two for long stretches before growing into the master number. The lesson assigned is to ground inspiration in patient, practical work.

Love and friendship

In relationships Elevens are described as devoted, romantic and deeply empathetic, but in need of calm, understanding partners who do not add to their stress. They are said to seek a spiritual or creative bond, not just companionship. As friends they offer insight and encouragement.

Work and calling

Numerology links Eleven with work that inspires or heals: teaching, the ministry, counselling, the arts, music, writing, psychology, invention and public speaking. Elevens are said to need a sense of calling.

In history and symbolism

The idea of master numbers belongs to the modern numerology of L. Dow Balliett and Juno Jordan, and has no ancient Pythagorean pedigree. Traditional number symbolism was often uneasy about eleven, because it oversteps ten, the number of completion and of the commandments; Augustine, for example, read it as a sign of transgression. Yet eleven also appears in vision: in Genesis 37 Joseph dreams of eleven stars bowing to him, a dream retold in the Qur'an's Sura of Joseph (12:4). After the betrayal of Judas the apostles numbered eleven until Matthias was chosen. In the Waite tarot card XI is Justice, while older Marseille decks give it to Strength.
