John Dee, with Edward Kelley as scryer; edited with a preface by Meric Casaubon · 1659
A True and Faithful Relation
In 1659 Meric Casaubon printed, from the manuscript in Sir Thomas Cotton's library, John Dee's own records of the 'actions' in which Edward Kelley scryed angels and spirits in a shewstone between 1583 and 1587, with two later sessions of 1607. The diaries follow Dee and Kelley from Mortlake to Cracow and Prague, through audiences with Albert Łaski, Stephen Báthory and Rudolf II, the dictation of the Enochian calls and tables, and the notorious 'cross-matching' of 1587. Casaubon framed the book with a long preface arguing that the spirits were real but diabolical, and included Dee's 1594/5 apology to the Archbishop of Canterbury. This text follows the EEBO-TCP transcription; Dee's longer marginal notes are kept as notes, and illegible words are marked.
