Mbiti's influential survey presented African traditional religions as a coherent field, stressing belief in God, spirits and ancestors and a distinctive African sense of time. It gave the subject academic standing and introduced ideas such as the 'living-dead'. Critics have argued that it generalised across very different peoples and read African thought through Christian categories.
