The Ugandan poet and scholar Okot p'Bitek mounted a sharp critique of how Western anthropologists and African Christian theologians described African religions. He argued that they imposed foreign concepts, such as an omnipotent high god, onto peoples like his own Acholi. The book remains a key text in debates about decolonising the study of religion.
