Written in 1577 by the Carmelite reformer Teresa of Ávila, Interior Castle describes the soul as a castle containing many dwelling places through which one progresses toward union with God at its center. Teresa draws on her own experience to discuss prayer, recollection, trials and mystical states. It is one of the most celebrated works of Christian mystical literature and a key text for comparing stages of contemplative development across traditions.
