Durkheim's classic argues that religion is a system of beliefs and practices relating to sacred things that unites a moral community, and that in worshipping the sacred a society worships itself. He built his case on ethnographic reports of Aboriginal Australian totemism, especially the Arrernte, which later anthropologists have reinterpreted. It remains a foundational text of the sociology of religion.
