The Enneads collect the treatises of Plotinus, the third-century founder of Neoplatonism, arranged by his student Porphyry into six groups of nine. They address the One, Intellect and Soul, the nature of beauty, the problem of evil, and the soul's return to its source. Stephen MacKenna's early twentieth-century translation is admired for its literary quality. The work underlies much of Western mysticism, Hermeticism and Renaissance esoteric philosophy.
