The Legend of the Baal-Shem

by Martin Buber · Maurice Friedman (trans.)

One of Martin Buber's early works, this book retells legends about Israel Baal Shem Tov with an introductory essay on Hasidic life and teaching. Buber emphasizes joy, hallowing of the everyday and the soul's relationship to God. It is a literary rather than critical work, but historically important for how Hasidism entered modern European and American consciousness.
