The Magicians of the Golden Dawn

Ellic Howe's documentary history of the Hermetic Order of the Golden Dawn from its founding in 1888 to its fragmentation in the early twentieth century. Drawing on letters and records, he examines the order's origins, including the disputed cipher manuscripts, and the internal conflicts involving figures such as Mathers, Westcott and Crowley. Skeptical in tone, it was one of the first critical histories of the order and remains a valuable source.
