Chrysal, or the Adventures of a Guinea
A satirical novel narrated by a gold coin passing through the hands of the powerful, published in instalments from 1760. Its scandalous episodes about a society of 'monks' are the main source of later lurid stories about Medmenham, and historians read them as fiction based on gossip.
