Hex Signs

Pennsylvania Dutch Barn Symbols and Their Meaning

by Don Yoder and Thomas E. Graves

A folklife study of the painted star designs on Pennsylvania German barns, tracing their sources in decorative tradition. The authors argue that the popular idea of hex signs as anti-witchcraft charms owes much to twentieth-century tourism and travel writing.
