The History of Magic

Eliphas Lévi's 1860 survey of magic from ancient civilizations to his own time, presented in A. E. Waite's English translation. It covers topics such as the Magi, Kabbalah, Gnosticism, the Templars, Rosicrucianism and Freemasonry, interpreted through Lévi's own philosophical and occult perspective. Not a reliable work of history, it is nonetheless important for understanding nineteenth-century occult thought and its influence on later esotericism.
