The Philokalia, Volume 1

The first volume of the English Philokalia, the anthology of Eastern Orthodox spiritual writings compiled in the eighteenth century by St. Nikodimos of the Holy Mountain and St. Makarios of Corinth. Translated by G. E. H. Palmer, Philip Sherrard and Kallistos Ware, it gathers texts by early authors including Evagrios and John Cassian on watchfulness, prayer and the struggle with the passions. It is central to understanding hesychasm and the contemplative tradition of Eastern Christianity.
