Eliphas Lévi's Dogme et Rituel de la Haute Magie, translated by A. E. Waite as Transcendental Magic. Published in two parts in the mid-1850s, it presents a doctrine of magic based on the astral light, the will and correspondences, and links the tarot's major arcana to the Hebrew alphabet. Lévi's work was a major catalyst for the French occult revival and for later orders such as the Golden Dawn.
