Harvey rescues the term 'animism' from Tylor's evolutionary theory and uses it for ways of living in which humans relate to animals, plants, places and objects as persons. Drawing on Ojibwe, Maori, Aboriginal and modern Pagan examples, he describes the etiquette of such relationships. The book helped launch the 'new animism' in religious studies.
