Tacitus's short ethnographic treatise on the Germanic peoples beyond the Rhine and Danube. It describes their customs, social structure and religion, including sacred groves, divination by lots and the cult of Nerthus. A key but idealising source, written partly to contrast German virtue with Roman decadence.
