A landmark ethnography of the religious thought of the Nuer, cattle-herding people of South Sudan, centred on their conception of Kwoth, Spirit, as both one and many. Evans-Pritchard showed that a non-literate people could hold a subtle theology, challenging evolutionary views of 'primitive' religion. His treatment of sacrifice and symbolism remains widely discussed.
