Eliade's comparative study, first published in French in 1951, defines shamanism as a technique of ecstasy in which the shaman's soul travels to the heavens or the underworld. It ranges across Siberia, Central Asia, the Americas and beyond. Hugely influential, it is now criticised for overgeneralisation.
