Solomonic Magic & the Grimoires

The Immaterial Book of St. Cyprian

by José Leitão

A study of the Book of St Cyprian as a cultural phenomenon rather than a single text. Leitão examines its legends in Portugal, Galicia and Brazil, the folklore of the dangerous book that must not be read, and the beliefs and practices that grew up around it. Combining folklore research with historical scholarship, it shows how a grimoire can exist as much in oral tradition as on the page.
